Used by professionals and amateurs video editors alike, Macs have long been considered the industry standard. So, almost every Mac model can be used for video editing, although the MacBook Pro is the most popular video editing computer (followed by the MacBook Air, iMac, and the iMac PC).

Which Mac is Best for Video Editors

It will help you understand your priorities. Do you care about screen size? Is color accuracy an issue? Do you need professional equipment? Or do you need a computer that can work with your preferred video editing software? Once you develop your checklist, it will be easier to find the best Mac.

Take a peek at the list of recommended Macs that will satisfy specific needs and requirements.

MacBook Pro 16-inch

This model is considered the best of the best for video editing. Since there are so many versions of the MacBook Pro 16-inch, we recommend at least 512GB storage capacity and a minimum of 16GB memory. The 16-inch display may be large enough to avoid needing an external monitor. The best-performing MacBook Pro uses the Apple M1 Pro or M1 Max found on later models; however, earlier models will also work great and are more budget-friendly.

This model is a stand-out for its:

  • Larger class-leading mini-LED screen
  • Enhanced performance
  • Most extensive battery life of any MacBook

MacBook Pro 14-inch

The same guidelines relate to the MacBook Pro 14-inch. You will want minimum storage of 512GB and a minimum of 16GB memory. The screen size may be a bit limiting, but adding a pre-owned or refurbished external monitor can provide the expansive view required for very detailed content.

MacBook Pro 13-inch

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is easily the most portable for video editing. We would stick with a minimum of 512GB of storage and a minimum of 16GB memory unless you don’t plan to use a lot of pixel-laden graphics. Then, an 8GB memory should be fine. As is often the case, when the screen size is smaller, the specs are less extensive, and the price tag is less.

MacBook Air

For those on a tighter budget, we recommend the MacBook Air. It is compact and portable and has a great battery life. Although it is not as powerful as a MacBook Pro, it can certainly do the job – particularly if you are not using it for ultra-professional videos.

iMac

If you don’t need a portable computer, the iMac PC provides excellent value for video editors. The price is reasonable, the screen is large, and the specs are comparable to the MacBooks! You won’t need to purchase a separate external screen. Its all-in-one design means the computer is built into the screen – so it is a great space saver as well.
